Study Overview
This study, published in Nutrition & Metabolism (2010), was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trialconducted on healthy young women. Over a period of 8 weeks, participants were supplemented with either 2 mg or 8 mg of astaxanthin daily.
The study aimed to evaluate how astaxanthin might affect markers related to immune response in healthy individuals.
Key Observations
The researchers measured several immune function indicators and reported the following:
-
A significant increase in lymphocyte activity, which are white blood cells involved in the immune system
-
Enhanced natural killer (NK) cell function, which plays a role in the body’s first line of defence
-
Increased carbon clearance, a marker associated with immune cell activation

These findings suggest that astaxanthin may play a supportive role in maintaining immune function in healthy individuals, although further research is still needed to fully understand its potential effects.
The Asxence Perspective
While we do not make claims about preventing or treating any medical condition, studies like this help inform our ingredient selection. Astaxanthin continues to be of interest for its antioxidant properties and its role in various biological processes, including those related to immune function.
