Supports Healthy Skin (UV Protection)
Share
At Asxence, we value transparency and evidence when it comes to the ingredients we choose. In this article, we explore a published clinical study that examined how astaxanthin supplementation may support skin exposed to UV stress.
This research does not make treatment claims, and we share it for educational purposes only.
Study Overview
In a 2018 double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study published in Nutrients, healthy adult participants were given 4 mg of astaxanthin daily for 10 weeks. The researchers investigated how astaxanthin affected skin condition under UV exposure.
The study measured outcomes such as minimal erythema dose (the amount of UV needed to cause skin redness), skin moisture levels, and visible skin texture.
Key Observations
The results suggested the following:
-
An increase in minimal erythema dose, meaning skin took longer to show redness after UV exposure
-
Reduced moisture loss caused by UV, suggesting improved hydration retention
-
Improved skin texture and roughness compared to the placebo group
These findings point to a potential role for astaxanthin in supporting skin condition under environmental stress, though further research is still ongoing.
